When done well, blogs can be a powerful marketing tool for your brand or your business. They allow you to connect with potential clients or customers directly and fine tune the image you want to convey.
When starting out a number of questions pop up for my clients…Why should I blog? What should I blog about? Do my customers or clients really care? I am not sure where to start. So this post is a bit of inspiration for those of you looking to start blogging for business.
Why should I start a blog?
The world is such a smaller place with thanks to technology. You can gain customers and clients from literally all over the world! By starting a blog you can stand out from your competitors by expressing your thoughts and opinions allowing your customers to get to know you a bit better and have them engage with you on a different level. By becoming an expert in a certain field you also add to your authenticity and trust – two factors that are important to buyers. So another reason to blog is to make money. People will be connected to your blog and in turn may purchase your product or service. Finally why should you blog? It can be fun and creative part of your marketing strategy.
What should I blog about?
Personally I don’t think you need to set any boundaries here. You can blog about anything! You can make reference to something that inspires you. Celebrate a milestone such as a birthday or anniversary of your business. Share a resource that you have an opinion on or offer advice through articles (such as these!) Don’t worry about what your reader will think just be yourself and develop a style that feels comfortable.
But I am not a good writer
Blogging becomes a bit of a hobby and you start to develop your style of writing. Of course you need to be able to perform a spell check and make sure your posts make sense – but you do not need to take up a writing course to start blogging. Blogging is a more casual style of writing so just get started and see how it feels. Let your personality come through.
I am not very good at…
I have talked about this before – getting comfortable with self-promotion. Blogging for your business is an extension of your brand. If you have a certain style or how you dress does this come through on your blog? Does your blog image reflect your business image? Take a look at this tax Blog and a florist Blog for an example of this. Blogging gives you an online identity that you can experiment with. When I started blogging 4 years ago I did some research into my competitors, looked at forums to see what topics people would be interested in and then started writing. My blogging style has evolved over time.
So get started! And when you do start commit to how often you will be blogging. Build a bank of topics as well as injecting with things that inspire you along the way. Find images you like that you can use in your blog or your own personal photos. Take a Beginners Guide to blogging course such as the one I did. Talk to your friends and customers about what they may want to read about. Be inspired by other people’s blogs. This is one I love for it’s simplicity and style. Start writing, you do not need to hit the publish button until you are ready.
And most of all enjoy it!
